You say "hook-up," I say...
Yesterday I was half listening to "Hollywood Hook-ups" on VH1 while doing some work around the house. Have you seen that program? It talks about various stars and their on-set hook-ups with co-stars, directors...
Well, Julia Roberts and her various hook-ups were discussed. She's been around!
What kills me is VH1 calls all her involvements "hook-ups." Out here in the real world, wouldn't she be called, oh I don't know, a slut?
I know, who am I to judge, me with my history of "hook-ups" (read: one night stands), and I was certainly no virgin when I got married, but why is that kind of behavior trivialized for the celebrity set but deemed stupid and irresponsible for the rest of us?

I can't believe I'm actually going to come to Julia Roberts' defense, because I think her acting and her politics both suck, but:
Back when I was in high school (back around the pleistocene), I was the guy that every girl in school liked to have as a buddy, but no one wanted to date. Because of this, I had the opportunity to observe their love lives from up close without being directly involved. Among these girls were several who had a reputation for being "easy". But what I begin to notice was that these "easy" girls were actually very sweet girls, and incredibly lonely. The reason they were "easy" was because they wanted to be loved, and thought that by giving guys what they wanted, they'd get love in return. They never learned.
And from what I've seen of Julia, both her dating habits and the look in her eyes in candid photos, she's one of those girls.
It doesn't excuse the behavior, but it certainly makes me feel more pity and less scorn for her.

Yeah, maybe Julia Roberts is the same way, I don't know, but you have to admit that shows on VH1 and MTV glorify what these people do and make it look like fun.
Posted by: GroovyVic at February 16, 2006 01:04 PMAnd I'm willing to bet that the whole time, there was one guy who worshipped you, and WOULD have given you the attention you craved, and you probably cried on his shoulder at least once, but never considered dating him. At least if your high school days were anything like mine.
Oh, no doubt, the shows are GawdOffal, but I can't blame Julia for that.
Posted by: Brian B at February 16, 2006 02:04 PMNot that I can remember. I was pretty obnoxious in my attention getting...aggressive...
But! These things happen for a reason! I'm, thankfully, not the same person I was 20 years ago (my gawd it's been that long).

Seriously, I agree, thank God things changed. I was the guy who watched females like you throw yourselves at jerks while I silently yelled, "Pick me! Pick me!" But when I look back at the girls I secretly admired, I have to wonder what I was thinking.
Posted by: Brian B at February 16, 2006 03:34 PMThat wasn't meant as a put-down of you.
I'll just shut up now.
