Another Day...

...another ailment in the Groovy household.

Son has this rash on his face that at first I thought was sunburn, but after doing some research discovered he has Fifth Disease.

Frankly I'm not surprised, as this has been going around the school, but what did surprise me is that there's nothing we can do now that he has it. It's viral, which means there's no medicine for this. Son looks worse than he feels.

Husband took Son to the doc yesterday after school and got medical confirmation (from something other than our Johns Hopkins Health Book and al-Gore's Internets) that Son does, indeed have a viral infection.

Two days left of school, and I haven't been this happy to see school end since I was in school!

der längste Tag

Believe me when I say that this truly was the longest day - der längste Tag.

I spent the day at the elementary school helping out, as it was Fun Day! There was a movie and popcorn for the kids and then a local amusement company had stuff out on the playground for the kids. Who did what depended on what grade they were in, so I followed the third and fourth graders, seeing as how Son is in third grade.

I swear to you now that I will never let that Chipmunk movie anywhere near my home. I saw it today for the first - and last - time. Gawd. What tripe.

And then...and then! A hot and sunny afternoon outside dealing with those games.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I went over and helped out, but it was a very long and tiring day. Luckily for me Husband was able to get the day off and stay home with Daughter. I can't imagine how much more worn out I would have been if I'd had to deal with her today.

The best thing, if one can call it that, is that Tuesday, the last day of school, I'll be over there all day again, but this time only with Son's class. That shouldn't be so bad.

The things I do for my kids.

(I almost forgot to mention that my name tag said "Mrs. Eiffel," NOT my first name. I got some strange looks from the other moms and teachers, but I don't care.)

Let Us Commence

Apparently Barry gave a commencement speech over the weekend?

All right, just a parboiled minute! I graduated from Cesspool of Liberalism University of PA (gasp!) sixteen years ago, and you know what? I couldn't tell you who the hell gave a commencement address, and do you know why?

I was too damned hungover to care.

Dammit, I wasn't listening to anything other then the pounding in my head. I wanted to leave, but you know, my family was watching, so proud.

So, hey, I don't know, freakin' anyone could have been up there doing a song and dance and I wouldn't have cared.

And...Barry? What kind of a substitute is that? I'd almost rather endure Ted Kennedy!

Wonders Never Cease

Miracle of miracles! I just got a phone call from my reunion cohort, Ultimate Driving Machine, and she informs me that we've received our very first RSVP.

I think Ultimate Driving Machine is encouraged , especially after I told her that most folks don't respond until the last two weeks prior to the event. AND! Yesterday a dozen invites came back due to bad addresses. UDM was, I think, a bit fed up with trying to find people, but I laughed and said "Honey, you ain't seen nothin' yet."

By mid-July, I predict we'll both feel something like this:

What A Weekend

Busy. Hardly home.

That pretty much sums up my weekend.

Yesterday (Monday) the younglings obviously had no school, and it was the one day that I didn't have to run anywhere, so we stayed home and relaxed. Husband decided he didn't want to cook out on the grill, no he was going to cook over an open flame!

Ah...the memories that came flooding back as I was engulfed in wood smoke.

Anyway, so yeah, and we sat on our front porch and just enjoyed the day.

And then, of course, last night we watched The Longest Day.

John has a long mustache!

We Saw It

templeofDOOM.jpg

(Yes, I realize the above picture is from Temple of Doom. I like it.)

Yesterday we took the younglings to see the latest Indiana Jones movie.

Eh.

I laughed out loud (I was the only one) at a few scenes, and while I don't want to give anything away, I just want to say this: Shia LeBeouf, you're no Marlon Brando.

And! Towards the end, Indiana says, and I kid you not:

"I've got a bad feeling about this."

I whooped out loud when I heard that one.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T

How do you teach your children to address adults? I realize this may depend on the relationship the child may or may not have with an adult, but do you teach your kids to refer to or address an adult as Mr. or Mrs.?

I ask because...well, here's the thing: Daughter and I were at the school today, helping out with the Relay for Life. Daughter walks over to me at one point, and I said "If you don't like sitting there you can go sit with Mrs. Soandso." (Mrs. Soandso happens to be a good friend of mine.)

Another mom looks over and says "Mrs. Soandso? What's up with that?"

Me: "It's about teaching my kids to have respect for their elders."

I guess that mom found it oddly humorous that I would teach my kids that, but am I so grossly outdated? Too formal? Too anal retentive?

(All of the above!)

Honestly, it's something that my mother taught me and I haven't shaken it. I've known the parent of one of my good friends for over thirty years and no matter how many times this woman tells me to call her by her first name I can't do it. I just can't!

And I'm not comfortable with, say, my kids calling people "Miss Jane" or "Mr. Joe," which was how the folks in church wanted to be addressed.

I don't know, I guess I never thought twice about it; I want my kids to be respectful of everyone, not just their elders.

What do you think?

Four Years

In looking over my records, I noted that four years ago yesterday (May 22) we moved to OH.

Huh. Sometimes it feels like we've been here a lot longer, but I guess that means that this is home. We love it, we have exactly what we've always wanted: a new house (with new electrical wiring and lots of outlets), 22 acres all to ourselves, and no close neighbors.

Sure, the school district leaves a lot to be desired, but one can't have it all, and I've chosen to look at all the positive aspects of our relocation.

Here's to the rest of our lives in the Buckeye State!

On The Homefront

Well, Daughter has three days of preschool left. Well, technically....she'll be doing another year of pre-K for 2008-2009. Age cut-offs, you know.

Big news: gas is one cent away from $4/gallon. I guess big oil talked to consumers? They found that, to paraphrase, we're not willing to give up our SUV's or solo commutes. Well, I don't worry about a commute, but look, I'll give up my SUV if you give me the $$$ to buy a more fuel-efficient vehicle. I get sick of curtailing my travels and spending out my a$$ for fuel.

So sure, I'll give up La Tahoe. You'll just have to haul my rear up my very long, very steep driveway when those pregnant roller skates you call cars can't make it.

It's going to be very interesting trying to plan stuff to do with the kids...and this possible trip to D.C.? $hould be very intere$ting.

I'm Here!

So, yeah, took a bit of a break from this here blog yesterday. It was the day of the phone call, as every time I tried to sit down with my coffee to watch the General Hospital episode Husband so kindly Tivo'd (or however one would spell it) for me the phone rang! Irritating, but I got my show watched.

And then the furor is building back up around the school district about a levy. Oh my GAWD, people are still mad about things that happened years ago, and from what I've heard rightly so. I'm doing my best to keep my mouth shut (and you know how hard that is for me), but I just want to scream at some of these people "You're hurting MY kids! All the kids are suffering because YOU have a fart crosswise and won't vote in a levy!"

I know, it goes deep with some people around here. I'm sure if I still lived in the school district I graduated from I'd be just as fired up.

But then again, I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to anything but myself...I'm just saying.

Oh...pretty tame, really. Re-working my schedule, as Daughter has been invited to a birthday party on May 31, the day I'd planned to see the SATC movie; I'm starting to feel like the planets are aligning in such a manner as to prevent my viewing this long awaited flick. Damn you!

And! Comments are back on. I'm in a "wait and see" mode with those bastards.

Okay, got to get my kids ready to board the precious and much fought over bus to school. (Buses are yet another bug up this district's collective arse.)

One more thing - you all know I have no love for Ted Kennedy, but I'm going to be big here and not make light of his medical situation.

I'm in a bitchy mood today, can you tell?

Well hell, I wake up to find that I have 99 spam comments on one post, which is nothing compared to the 375 (and counting) spams I had on my mothers day picture.

By the by, to the Munuvians, what the piss? I'm either going to shut off comments entirely, or...well, Husband suggested pulling the plug on this here blog entirely. I don't want to, and I won't, but still.

No, it's Monday and the day got started in typical fashion: arguing with Daughter over her eating her breakfast. Every. Damn. Morning.

There's less than two weeks of school (with preschool finishing up on the 29th) and I'm counting down. I know, I know! By, oh, the third week of June I'll be on here bitching about how the kids are driving me insane and because gas is so outofmya$$ expensive I don't want to drive around in La Tahoe and my mother will be all "why can't I see the kids?" and I'll be hiding in my closest scarfing down Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, totally blowing my diet and being all fat for the class reunion.

Make It Stop

After this past weekend, I can honestly say not only am I totally sick of Indiana Jones, but I have not desire to see the new movie.

Why, you ask, when you used to love those movies?

Because the SciFi channel showed them ad nauseum over the weekend, and the History channel even got in on the gig, with its "Quest for the Lost Ark" (in which we discover a lost tribe of Jewish people in Ethiopia, and the investigator believes the Ark was really a drum) and comparison program of real archaeologists vs. Indiana Jones.

I now know more than I ever really wanted to know about digging things up.

And the whole Crystal Skull thing? I don't know, but if I were to go by what one person on the Hitler channel History channel said about it, it all sound a bit too "ooooweeeeooooo" goofball to me.

Plus it's worshiping idols, which is a no-no.

Admittedly, yeah, I did like the Indy movies, but I've reached a saturation point with the whole thing. Son, however, was riveted...

Never In The Afternoon

People think I'm crazy for going up to le Mart de Wal so early in the morning. See, my kids get on the bus at 7:57, and as soon as their heinies are on board I'm off! I can be up to the Wal-Mart by 8:15!

And there is no one there. Well, not many people, that is.

So I can get my shopping done in peace, without someone standing in the middle of the aisle having a gab fest.

(Really, go to any Wal-Mart in the country and there is always at least two people standing right in the middle of an aisle yakking away. And they don't move.)

Yesterday Daughter and I decided to trek up there after the PTO meeting. (Yes, I went to a PTO meeting; there's an entirely new crew heading it up, and it's going to be a lot better now than it was.) Anyhoo, I wanted to get a new PS2 controller, so there you go.

My GAWD! You people are rude in the Wal-Mart! Someone even growled at Daughter: "Get outta my way!" To a four year old!

So, yeah, cram that up your bunger, I'll stick to going to the Mart in the wee small hours of the morning.

Sometimes I REALLY Hate Nature

Tonight Daughter complained that she had a sore spot on her head. Further investigation by Husband revealed a tick on her scalp.

Dammit.

He got it off, or out as the case may be, and it was engorged with blood.

Dammit!

By this time Daughter was crying because obviously it hurt when Husband pulled out the little bastard, and as I sat consoling her I calmly recited the pediatrician's phone number. (It never hurts to check, you know?)

Notice that I said "calmly." My outward appearance gave all indication that I was fine, but inwardly I was freaking out.

Anyway, the doc said to cleanse the area with alcohol and then apply antibiotic cream to the bite area. We had the alcohol but no ointment, so I volunteered to make the trip up to the store. Better that I get out and be useful instead of sitting around thinking the worst.

As I really was freaking out, I had to have something to calm me down, therefore in lieu of beer and cigarettes to cloud my brain I settled for chocolate and Coca-Cola. Still bad for me, but I won't get in trouble with my husband.

(But between you and me I'd really like a cigarette right now.)

Now we're on fever watch, but I'm hoping against hope that because Daughter is on an antibiotic right now nothing will happen.

Sometimes I REALLY hate nature.

Honesty Is The Best Policy

So, Son's trip to the recycling center landfill dump was rescheduled for yesterday (Wednesday) because Monday was cold and rainy. Turns out I could have kept him home Monday because all they did was watch videos.

Yesterday Son gets up for school, and it's rainy and gross looking; I said "Son, just stay home! If you guys don't go today, all you'll do is watch more videos because the teachers have nothing planned."

"But Mom, then you'd have to send in an excuse and I'm not sick and it's wrong to lie!"

At which point I thought "Damn, Husband and I must be doing something right."

No, Son would not be swayed, go to school he would and he did. They did go to the dump, but had to come back to the school for lunch because it started to rain. And they watched videos. Oh well.

Let Them Eat Cake

During my weekly grocery run on Monday, I spied with my little eye "cupcake" mix.

Yes people, we now have cupcake mix on our grocery shelves!

I picked up the box and said "What marketing genius!" I mean, seriously, how many rubes out there are going to buy this?

All these years we've been (gasp!) using regular cake mix and pouring it into cupcake papers (or if you're like me, just buying effing cupcakes from a bakery) and now we have cupcake mix!

I don't know about you, but I think this is a shameful waste of money. I mean, shit, we spend almost $4/gallon of gas to get to the damn store (in my case, I drive 10 miles to get there) and then we get rooked out of even more of our money to buy effing cupcake mix?

Weekend Wrap-Up

Well, how was your mothers day?

Husband and the younglings took me over to PA for my moth-ers day lunch at Outback. I was a little stunned when we were asked if we had a smoking preference, and I said as much to the manager. Only because, you know, here in this county of the armpit of OH one cannot smoke in a restaurant.

Not that I smoke (anymore), mind you, I just like that whole freedom of choice thing.

But yeah, it was a good day. A good weekend, in fact, the possible exception being the bonehead that almost plowed into me and La Tahoe Saturday. Luckily I have the reflexes of a cat and stomped on the brakes in time.

Now it's Monday, and I'm engaged in the morning ritual of trying to get Daughter to eat her breakfast. Every damn morning, folks! And Son has that field trip to the dump landfill today, so I'm trying to dress him warmly for that, as it won't get out of the 50's and is supposed to rain.

Yes, Yes, Yes I Do...

...I've got strep throat, what about you?

I knew this rash meant I had strep.

Anyway, so yeah, I made it in to my doc this morning, but only after I broke all posted speed limits to get there. I hate those "can you be here now?" requests, and besides, I still had to sit and wait once I got there.

What bothers me is that Daughter was about two days behind me, symptom-wise, so I'm keeping an eye on her, although she went from sore throat right into snotty nose and cough.

Oh well. I'm on antibiotics, after assuring the doctor I'd take them all (sure, like I want to be sick) and I'm feeling rather poopy at the moment, so I'm going to go to bed until I have to wake up and take Son to the eye doctor.

So much for that super groovy television Husband purchased. The effing thing doesn't work! We haven't even had that fucking thing two weeks!

Pardon my language, but this is just bullshit. Stupid, fucking....dammit!

Now we have to wait for a service call on Thursday between 1-5 P.M., and we'll have to pay for the service call too!

Sonofamotherf*ckingbitch!!

It's a good thing we still have the old television. At least I know that thing will work.

UPDATE: Somehow I got the thing working again. I don't know what I did, exactly, but the TV is working. I chalk it all up to a brain fart.

Comp'ny Comin'

This morning, after the younglings were on the bus and on the way to school, I started cleaning the house in anticipation of our company this afternoon.

You know, that pastor from this church we started going to? (But didn't go to yesterday because I felt like poo.)

So, Husband (who has the day off) assisted by clearing stuff out of the way for me and the Dyson. I tidied, I dusted, I vacuumed, I even scrubbed the toilets, and finally I said:

"Screw it. We live here, and I'm getting sick and tired of cleaning up for clergy. Look at how the last one blew up in our faces!"

"Blew?" Husband asked sarcastically.

"Yes, blew. Just blew all over," I said with a snarl.

Honestly. While my faith has not wavered in the least, I'm so sick and tired of hearing the spiel from ministers, all that "serve serve SERVE!" stuff. Husband and I served our arses off at the last church, and left because it started to become our entire life. We were serving the minister, not God. (And I only did anything at all just to shut the damn pastor up. A-hole.)

So, yeah, the house is tidy, at least until Daughter gets home and drags out her Barbies.

But I just...don't care about this meeting. Is that wrong?

Bo0by Prizes

So, my twenty year high school reunion is coming up, and once again the question of door prizes has been raised. My friend, Ultimate Driving Machine, and I have pretty much determined we won't be handing anything out, not after the debacle five years ago.

One of our classmates and spouse decided their contribution to the fun would be to bring in the...um..er...adult products they sell. Yeah, well, we're all adults (I think) but they purposely drew the name of one classmate who just happens to be a minister.

Yeah.

Picture it: the minister opens the box and pulls out....an adult toy in the shape of male genitalia and a riding crop.

Now, I know, ministers do it too, but that was truly out of line and immature.

I thought "Why not get t-shirts made up, with our graduating year and stuff." I floated that past Husband (who also has a 20 year reunion coming up but refuses to go) and he said "I wouldn't want a shirt like that."

So there you go. Maybe they'll get cake.

Because we're all out of c0ck.

Greetings From My Library

Today I started tearing through my growing library preparing summer reading lists for the kids.

Oh, I know, let the kids enjoy their summer, and to be honest, we start off all motivated, with every intention of doing those worksheets and reviewing and reading those books, but somehow it only takes one "Mom, can I skip..." to get us off track.

Finding books for Daughter is easier, as I've saved almost all my kid books, but for some reason I cannot find The Very Hungry Caterpillar or The Snowy Day, two books I know I had around here somewhere.

And I've combed the basement library (that extends almost the entire length of said basement), the kids' rooms, and my hiding places in the dining room. Nothing! Grr....

Can You Hear Me Now?

Here's what we found out at the doctor:

Daughter's left ear is perfect, however her right ear still has fluid in there, which is causing decreased hearing on that side.

The doc wants to see her in six weeks for another hearing test, and if the fluid still hasn't cleared up, he'll treat and go from there. I get the feeling the pediatrician wants to do what ever he can to avoid Daughter having to get tubes again.

Which, in my eyes, makes this doctor one helluva guy.

Thank you all for your prayers today; they worked!

The Grapevine

For some reason, the talk about Rev. Wright in last night's Grapevine caught my ear. See if you can figure out why.

Save A Prayer

Seeing as how today is the National Day of Prayer, may I make a request of you? At 1:15 this afternoon, could you please send up a prayer that Daughter's ears are perfect and she won't have to go back for tubes?

See, I'm really afraid that this last ear infection hasn't really cleared up, and Daughter seems to not be hearing as well as she should.

If everyone sends up a word or two, that would help a lot!

Thanks!
