"...relatively minor significance..."
Gettysburg's Borough Council voted yes to a gambling casino.
They justify this by saying they'll get all kinds of money, which will build up the police force and reduce property taxes.
Having been one of those people who's wandered the fields in a hoop skirt, I have to wonder why the tourist trade isn't enough.
According to the linked article:
"The site of the proposed casino is of relatively minor significance - some Confederate troops gathered there before heading off to fight in the three-day battle that turned the tide of the Civil War."
Minor significance??? Oh boy, I'm sure a lot of Southerners with Confederate ancestors would say differently.
I'm annoyed that my favorite place may become a haven for gambling. Hey, I've already contributed a lot of money to blow up that tower, and I'm ready to send money and support to stop a casino. I'll write letters to "Fast Eddie" Rendell...I'll even go to Harrisburg with the CWPT if I have to!
"Some residents are worried about the traffic and crime that gamblers could bring to Gettysburg. Others say a casino is an insult to the solemn battlefields, where many dead soldiers are buried."
If we don't work to save this and other battlefields, what will we have left for future generations? I've seen the sprawl in VA and it's disgusting. We have revisionist historians, those that want to gloss over all the things, good and bad, that made this country what it is, and by destroying pieces of our history...well, that's like denying anything ever happened.

They're trying to get casinos in North Philadelphia too, using the same lame resoning. Geez, aren't there enough ways for people to waste their money in
PA? They already have a lottery, OTB, and they're in on Powerball, the national lottery. Yet you can't buy a beer in the grocery store. Go figure.
You can't buy BEER in a grocery store????
Lord, I thought Oregon's liquor laws were antiquated.
Posted by: Brian B at April 5, 2006 08:01 AMIt's messed up. You have to go to a "Wine and Spirits" shop for booze, and a beer distributer for beer. It's a hassle. When we moved to OH I was shocked at first that I could get milk AND beer at the grocery store, but now I just take it for granted.
PA is so anal about stuff like septic tanks and all that, but they'll let a gambling casino go in anywhere. It boggles the mind.
Posted by: GroovyVic at April 5, 2006 08:11 AMHeh, try South Carolina.
You can get beer and wine in a grocery store (not on Sundays, of course) but their liquor stores are only open 9 am to 7 pm, Monday through Saturday. So essentially, between work and commuting there's about an hour an evening you can get booze, and just hope you have some free time on Saturday.
Growing up in NY, I was shocked to find in other states you could get wine in a grocery store. Moving to OH, I was shocked to find vodka for sale in the grocery store -- though it's the cheap, plastic bottle stuff, not a decent brand like Skyy. I'd hate to see what Utah's laws are like.
